Early Life and Education
Wizkid was born on July 16, 1990, in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria. He grew up in a large, interfaith family with a Muslim father and a Pentecostal Christian mother. His musical journey began at a young age, singing in his local church choir. By the age of 11, he had formed a music group called the "Glorious Five" with his church friends and even released a collaborative album.
He attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School and later enrolled at Lagos State University, before transferring to Lead City University. However, his passion for music led him to drop out to focus entirely on his burgeoning career.
Music Career
Wizkid's professional music career began in the late 2000s when he signed a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E), a label co-founded by Banky W. It was under this label that he released his debut single, "Holla at Your Boy," in 2010. The song was an instant sensation and became the anthem for a generation of young Nigerians, catapulting him to national stardom.
His debut studio album, "Superstar," was released in 2011 to widespread critical and commercial acclaim. The album featured a string of hits, including "Tease Me/Bad Guys," "Don't Dull," and "Pakuromo," cementing his status as Nigeria's next big thing. He followed this with his self-titled second album, "Ayo," in 2014, which included the international hit "Ojuelegba." The song's remix, featuring Drake and Skepta, marked a significant turning point in his global crossover.
International Success and Starboy Entertainment
In 2016, Wizkid achieved monumental international success as a featured artist on Drake's global smash hit, "One Dance." The song reached number one in 15 countries, including the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and earned him his first Grammy Award for his contribution. This collaboration shattered barriers for Afrobeats on the world stage.
That same year, he signed a multi-album deal with RCA Records and founded his own record label, Starboy Entertainment, which has since nurtured artists like Terri and the production duo Legendury Beatz. He released his third studio album and major-label debut, "Sounds from the Other Side," in 2017, which featured collaborations with major international artists like Chris Brown, Ty Dolla Sign, and Major Lazer.
His fourth studio album, "Made in Lagos" (2020), became a global phenomenon. The album's single, "Essence," featuring Tems, became the first Nigerian song to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and was dubbed the "song of the summer." A remix featuring Justin Bieber propelled the track even higher up the charts.
