Nathaniel Bassey was born on August 27, 1978, in Lagos, Nigeria, although he hails from Ikot Ofon Ikono, Uyo, in Akwa Ibom State. He was born into a devout Christian family, with his father, Mr. Joshua Bassey, being a pastor in The Apostolic Church.
He grew up with a deep love for music, particularly jazz, and was inspired by greats like Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis. He developed a passion for the trumpet at a young age. While his peers were interested in other things, he would spend hours practicing the instrument.
He initially enrolled to study Politics and International Relations at the University of Lagos. However, he later moved to London to study music and also studied music at Middlesex University.
Nathaniel Bassey's career began in the secular music world. For many years, he was a prominent jazz trumpeter in Lagos, playing at various clubs and events. He was the bandleader for the jazz group "Spectrum 4" and was a regular performer at the renowned jazz club, Eko Le Meridien. During this time, he was approached by the late Elder Steve Rhodes, a jazz icon in Nigeria, who was impressed by his talent.
However, Bassey felt a strong, persistent call to dedicate his music to God. This led to a pivotal moment where he decided to leave the secular jazz scene and fully commit to a career in gospel music ministry.
Nathaniel Bassey's transition to gospel music marked the beginning of an incredibly impactful ministry. His sound is distinct—a blend of soul, jazz, and contemporary worship. His music is known for its reverent and intimate atmosphere, often leading listeners into a deep state of worship.
He has released a string of critically acclaimed albums and songs that have become global worship anthems. Some of his most iconic songs include:
"Imela (Thank You)": A beautiful worship song that became a massive hit, featuring the singer Enitan Adaba.
"Onise Iyanu (God of Awesome Wonders)": A powerful song celebrating the miraculous nature of God, featuring Micah Stampley.

"Casting Crowns": A simple yet profound worship song of adoration.
"Tobechukwu (Praise God)": A recent hit collaboration with Mercy Chinwo that has enjoyed massive success.
His albums, such as Someone's at the Door, The Son of God (& Imela), This God is Too Good, and Hallelujah Again, have all been highly successful, solidifying his reputation as a consistent and anointed worship leader.
In June 2017, Nathaniel Bassey initiated the #HallelujahChallenge, a one-hour midnight praise and worship session streamed live on Instagram. The movement started with a simple instruction to praise God for a month. It grew into a global phenomenon, drawing tens of thousands of live participants from around the world each night. The challenge created a massive online congregation and was credited with numerous testimonies of miracles and divine intervention. It has since become an annual event, cementing his status as a pioneer in using social media for mass worship.
