Black Sherif was born on January 9, 2002, in Konongo-Zongo, a town in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He spent his early years in this vibrant community, an experience that heavily influences his music's themes and narratives.
He received his early education at Konongo Zongo Islamic Basic School and later attended Kumasi Academy for his senior high school education. After graduating, he was admitted to the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) but later transferred to the University of Ghana to pursue his studies.
Black Sherif's passion for music began at a young age, and he started creating music while still in high school. He gained initial recognition with the release of his singles "Money" and "Cry For Me."
However, his major breakthrough came in 2021 with the release of "First Sermon." The freestyle-like track, delivered with raw energy and passion, quickly went viral and introduced him to a wider audience. He followed this up with "Second Sermon," a track that became a massive anthem across Ghana and beyond. The success of "Second Sermon" was amplified when he collaborated with Nigerian superstar Burna Boy for a remix, which propelled him to international prominence.
In March 2022, Black Sherif released "Kwaku the Traveller." The song was an instant global phenomenon. It detailed a story of youthful ambition, mistakes, and perseverance, resonating with millions worldwide. The track became one of the most-Shazamed songs globally, topped charts in Nigeria and Ghana, and made him the first solo Ghanaian artist to reach number one on the Nigerian Apple Music charts. This single cemented his status as one of Africa's most influential new artists.
In October 2022, Black Sherif released his highly anticipated debut album, The Villain I Never Was. The 14-track project was a critical and commercial success, offering a deeper look into his life story, struggles, and aspirations. The album featured no other guest artists besides Burna Boy on the "Second Sermon" remix, allowing Black Sherif to showcase his distinct narrative style. It included hit tracks like "Soja," "Oh Paradise," and "45."
Black Sherif's music is characterized by its emotional depth, honest lyricism, and the fusion of traditional Ghanaian sounds with contemporary hip-hop and trap. He is a leading figure in the "Asakaa" movement, a Ghanaian drill subgenre that has gained significant popularity.
