Early Life and Education
Tekno was born on December 17, 1992, in Bauchi State, Nigeria, into a military family. Due to his father's profession, he grew up in several parts of the country, including Nassarawa, Kaduna, and Abuja. At the age of eight, his father enrolled him in a music school where he learned to play the piano and guitar.
His early exposure to music and his innate talent laid the foundation for his future career.
Music Career
Tekno's talent was first noticed in 2012 when he was discovered by renowned comedian Julius Agwu at an event in Abuja. It was his performance of a self-produced song titled "Onye Ne Kwu" that caught the attention of Iyanya and Ubi Franklin, the heads of Made Men Music Group (MMMG). He was subsequently signed to the label in 2013.
Under MMMG, he released his first official single, "Holiday," which featured Davido. However, it was his 2015 mega-hit, "Duro," that launched him into superstardom. The song became a massive anthem across Africa and even gained popularity in the United States. A remix featuring Flavour and Phyno further amplified its reach.
He followed this success with a string of back-to-back monster hits, including "Wash," "Diana," and the pan-African blockbuster, "Pana" (2016). "Pana" became one of the biggest songs of the year, solidifying his status as an Afrobeats A-lister.
In addition to his singing career, Tekno is a highly sought-after producer, sometimes credited under the alias Slim Daddy. His most notable production credit is for Davido's 2017 global smash hit, "If," which he wrote and produced. He also produced "FIA" for Davido and several other tracks for prominent artists.
In 2017, he signed a deal with Columbia Records and later, in 2018, with Universal Music Group Nigeria. After a long and successful run of singles, he released his debut studio album, "Old Romance," in 2020.
International Success and Recognition
Tekno's music has consistently achieved international success, earning him a dedicated fanbase across the globe. His notable achievements include:
Multiple nominations at The Headies, Nigeria's premier music awards.
A win for "Best New Act" at the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) in 2016.
A nomination for "Best International Act: Africa" at the BET Awards in 2017.
His work as a producer and songwriter has been featured on projects by international stars. In 2019, he was featured on Beyoncé's curated soundtrack album, "The Lion King: The Gift," on the track "Don't Jealous Me."
Despite facing challenges, including a temporary vocal cord issue, Tekno has remained a resilient and influential figure in Afrobeats, celebrated for his exceptional talent in crafting timeless hits.
