Born on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Burna Boy grew up in a family with a rich artistic heritage. His grandfather, Benson Idonije, was once the manager of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. His mother, Bose Ogulu, who would later become his manager, was a translator and French teacher.
Burna Boy attended Corona Secondary School in Ogun State, Nigeria. He later moved to London for his university education, where he studied Media Technology at the University of Sussex.
Burna Boy's musical journey began at a young age, creating his own beats with FruityLoops software. He rose to prominence in 2012 with the release of his single "Like to Party" from his debut album L.I.F.E (Leaving an Impact for Eternity), which was released in 2013.
His international breakthrough came with his third studio album, Outside, released in 2018. This album, which was his major-label debut, featured the hit track "Ye." In 2019, he released his fourth album, African Giant, which received a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album and won Album of the Year at the All Africa Music Awards.
Burna Boy's fifth studio album, Twice as Tall, released in 2020, won the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 2021. He has continued to release successful albums, including Love, Damini in 2022.
Burna Boy has achieved significant international acclaim. He was the first African artist to have two albums surpass one billion streams on Spotify. He has won the BET Award for Best International Act multiple times and has been nominated for numerous other awards, including the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked him at number 197 on its list of the 200 greatest singers of all time.
