Omah Lay was born on May 19, 1997, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. He grew up in the city's Marine Base neighborhood and comes from a musical family. His grandfather was a percussionist for the legendary highlife singer Celestine Ukwu, and his father was also a drummer. This deep musical heritage profoundly influenced his artistic path. He began his journey in music first as a rapper under the name "Lil King" and later transitioned into music production, where he honed his skills creating beats for other artists.
Feeling that he wasn't getting enough credit for the songs he was producing and writing for others, Omah Lay decided to start performing his own music. He recorded and released the songs "Do Not Disturb" and "Hello Brother" in 2019, which gained some attention in his local Port Harcourt music scene.
His career experienced a massive breakthrough in 2020 after he signed with the record label KeyQaad. On May 22, 2020, he released his debut extended play (EP), "Get Layd." The five-track project was an instant and overwhelming success. All five songs, including the standout singles "You" and "Bad Influence," topped the Nigerian Apple Music charts simultaneously. The EP's raw emotion, infectious melodies, and relatable lyrics resonated deeply with audiences, establishing Omah Lay as a major new force in African music. He became the inaugural artist for Apple's Africa Rising campaign.
Following the huge success of his debut EP, Omah Lay released his second EP, "What Have We Done," in November 2020. The project featured the hit single "Godly," which further cemented his stardom.
In July 2022, he released his highly anticipated debut studio album, "Boy Alone." The album was a deeply personal and vulnerable project, exploring themes of fame, depression, and loneliness. It was critically acclaimed for its lyrical depth and cohesive, moody sound. The album featured a popular collaboration with Canadian superstar Justin Bieber on the track "Attention."
Omah Lay's music stands out for its lyrical complexity and emotional honesty. He often delves into his personal struggles and feelings, creating a sound that is both contemporary and timeless. His sound has been described as "Afro-depression" due to its melancholic yet groovy nature, setting him apart from many of his peers in the vibrant Afrobeats landscape.
In December 2020, Omah Lay, along with fellow Nigerian artist Tems, was arrested in Uganda for allegedly violating COVID-19 lockdown protocols after performing at a concert in the country. Their arrest sparked a widespread social media campaign, #FreeTemsandOmahLay, with fans and fellow artists calling for their release. They were detained for two days before the charges were dropped, and they were allowed to return to Nigeria. The incident drew significant international attention to the challenges faced by touring artists.
